North East Chinese Association
North East Chinese Association is the major and most influential association aims to promote the Chinese culture and act as a bridge between the Chinese community and the local authority. located in the heart of Newcastle Chinatown, Stowell Street, and Established in 1979 NECA was founded by a group of local Chinese people residing in Newcastle Area. Dr Robert Ng and Mr Peter Chen were among many contributors. Dr Robert Ng was elected as the founding president of NECA. Latterly, with the increasing of influences, it gained strong support from Newcastle City Council for doing voluntary community services. A Trusteeship has been formed as the legal guardians to look after the property. In 1985, NECA firstly established the annual event of the Chinese New Year Celebration in Newcastle, sharing the joy amongst the general population in Newcastle. The tradition has been kept until now. In 35 years operation, NECA help the Chinese community to establish various functional organizations, such as the Charitable Unincorporated Association and The Luncheon Club for Elderly People Due to the extraordinary work, Her Majesty the Queen awarded Mr Peter Chen a MBE for his long and distinguished contribution to community service in 1997. Mr Peter Chen was the first Chinese to be awarded an MBE in the North East Region. |
